Chiefs hoping to sign Patrick Mahomes to extension before season

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is probably the most underpaid player in the NFL, as the reigning Super Bowl MVP is set to make less than $3 million during the fourth year of his rookie deal next season. The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to change that, however.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was asked by reporters on Sunday about the contract status of Mahomes and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was franchise tagged earlier this offseason. Now that the draft is complete, Veach said he is “hopeful and confident” the Chiefs can get extensions done for both players prior to the start of the 2020 season.

This is the first year Mahomes is eligible for an extension, so it makes sense that the Chiefs want to get the deal done as soon as possible. Mahomes was named the NFL MVP in 2018 and led Kansas City to a Super Bowl victory last season, meaning his stock could not be higher. The price tag will only continue to go up each year, however, which is why the Chiefs would be wise to not let him play out the final two years of his rookie deal.

Mahomes will undoubtedly become the highest-paid player in the NFL whenever he signs his next contract, and we have heard some astronomical figures thrown around for just how much money he could get. The Houston Texans are also looking to sign Deshaun Watson to an extension, so whichever star quarterback signs first will set the benchmark for the other.
