Davante Adams had a huge opportunity to step up when Jordy Nelson went down with a season-ending injury last summer, but he did not make the most of it. Less than a year later, the former Fresno State star finds himself in danger of losing his roster spot.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel lists Adams among several receivers who will be “battling for their lives” in training camp this year. Nelson looks like a good candidate to bounce back and Randall Cobb isn’t going anywhere. Ty Montgomery underwent ankle surgery and should also earn a spot if he proves he is healthy, and the Packers used a fifth-round pick on speedy University of California wide receiver Trevor Davis.
Aaron Rodgers tried his best to get Adams involved last season, targeting him 93 times. That was third on the team behind only Randall Cobb and James Jones. Adams was only able to turn those 93 targets into 50 catches for 483 yards and a lone touchdown.
To make matters worse, Adams ranked in the top 12 (bottom 12?) of the NFL with six dropped passes.
If you remember, it didn’t take long for Adams to be called out by Packers coach Mike McCarthy last season. Both McCarthy and Rodgers were openly frustrated with the team’s former second-round pick, and rightfully so. Are they willing to give him another season? Don’t be surprised if the answer is no.
