IK Enemkpali issued a statement Tuesday to apologize for punching Geno Smith and breaking the quarterback’s jaw, which led to his release by the New York Jets.
“I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans,” Enemkpali said in his statement. “Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets.”
Reports have indicated the two players fought over money after Smith no-showed a charity event that was being hosted by Enemkpali.
It was smart of Enemkpali to apologize and express contrition over his actions, but this is going to follow him for a while. It might take time for another team to give him a shot.
