The Dallas Cowboys were horrific defensively in their thrilling win over the New York Giants on Sunday, and they have signed a player they are hoping will help remedy that immediately.
The Cowboys beat the Giants 40-37 in overtime at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Dallas stole a win thanks in large part to Brandon Aubrey, who made a 62-yard field goal to force overtime and then a 46-yarder to win the game.
Following his team’s victory, Jerry Jones told reporters that the Cowboys have signed veteran pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Clowney visited with the Cowboys last week, and Sunday’s result proved that they need all the help they can get. Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards and the Giants finished with more than 500 yards of total offense.
Clowney, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Houston Texans in 2014, was a free agent after he was released by the Carolina Panthers in May. He appeared in 14 games last season after signing a 2-year, $20 million deal.
Clowney had 46 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in his lone season with the Panthers. The 32-year-old has bounced around to several different teams over the last few years. He played the first five years of his career with the Texans and then had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Panthers.
The Cowboys were undoubtedly relieved to get into the win column on Sunday, but we have already seen the impact that trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers has had. While Jones insists Dallas will be better off in the short term without Parsons, the results on Sunday suggested otherwise.
