Pat McAfee reveals the 2 things he would need to make an NFL comeback

Pat McAfee was one of the best punters in the NFL at the time he stepped away from football to enter a career as an entertainer and talk show host. He has no reason to go back into the world of punting footballs and making special teams tackles, but two things would need to happen for him to attempt a return.

McAfee had ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on as a guest for his show on Monday. After Schefter mentioned on the show that he had received an interesting text message, McAfee was teasing Schefter about the potential subject of the message. After deflecting McAfee’s best detective efforts, Schefter turned the tables and teased McAfee back. The NFL insider joked that the text message in question was asking when McAfee would be returning to the NFL and making a comeback.

McAfee played along and said he would need more money than the $85 million deal he received from ESPN. He then joked that he would need a few months too in order to be able to pass NFL drug tests.

“The number that’s being reported by everybody as what the deal is, that ain’t going to be enough,” McAfee said. “It’s going to have to be more than that. But also, I’m going to need about two to three months to get these urine and blood clear. I’m not passing any of these tests that they’re going to put me in.”

So a few months to get all the substances out of his system, and then more than $85 million. That sounds doable, right?

Or maybe, just maybe, McAfee’s decision to retire after 2016 and go into entertainment could not have gone any better. Now he gets to make multiple millions and use whatever illegal products the NFL wouldn’t allow.

Here is an interview LBS conducted with McAfee from his playing days, after he was actually drug tested.
