New York Giants owner John Mara indicated over the weekend that Odell Beckham Jr. could be traded this offseason if the right offer comes along, and at least one team is reportedly seeing what it would take to acquire the star wide receiver.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that the Los Angeles Rams have reached out to the Giants about possibly trading for Beckham. When Leonard asked a Rams executive on Monday about the information his sources gave him, the exec reportedly “flashed a wry smile” and asked where he heard it.
Leonard also notes that New York’s asking price for Beckham is believed to be a first-round draft pick “plus” something else, which likely means the “plus” isn’t another first-rounder. The Rams have the No. 23 overall pick in the draft and have already been aggressive in improving their team this offseason, bringing in key defensive pieces like cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. Adding Beckham to a wide receiver group that already includes Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp would be a huge move.
Any team that traded for Beckham would likely want a commitment from the 25-year-old that he will sign a long-term contract extension, as he is entering the final season of his rookie deal. It would stand to reason that the L.A. lifestyle is something that appeals to Beckham, so he may be willing to work something out with the Rams.
We know Beckham wants a contract extension before he plays this season, and he is reportedly willing to sit out until he gets one. However, the Giants have been critical of his off-field behavior and were clearly less than thrilled with a questionable video that circulated featuring the receiver earlier this month.
