Reporter hints at Browns’ possible plans for Baker Mayfield
The Cleveland Browns are committed in some form to Baker Mayfield, but there certainly appear to be some doubts creeping into the quarterback’s long-term future with the organization.
In a new mailbag column, Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com shed some light on the Browns’ thinking as it relates to Mayfield. She expects the Browns to look into “a few veteran quarterbacks” and look at the plausibility of upgrading on Mayfield. However, if that does not prove realistic, Mayfield will be supported “in every way possible.” That includes improving his receivers and the offensive line, as well as tailoring the team’s offensive scheme more to his strengths.
The Browns certainly sound open to finding a new quarterback. However, there is also an admission that there may not be an upgrade available to them. Indeed, another report suggested that the plan is currently to enter 2022 with Mayfield as the starter.
That said, there definitely seemed to be some issues between Mayfield and the coaching staff late in the season. The report about tailoring the scheme more toward Mayfield should be welcomed by him, as scheme was said to be one of Mayfield’s complaints throughout the season.
