Sam Bradford wants Vikings to throw downfield more

Sam Bradford

The Minnesota Vikings have run a rather conservative passing offense, preferring to move the ball methodically and take few shots downfield. Quarterback Sam Bradford wants to change that.

After putting up only 13 points in a loss to the Lions, Bradford called for a more balanced, aggressive approach as they prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys.

“I think schematically, that was just kind of how we decided to attack [the Lions],” Bradford said, via Ben Goessling of ESPN. “But I think after last week, we realized that we’ve got to be a little more balanced in how we go out there and do that.”

Bradford has bemoaned the Vikings’ lack of “explosive” plays, and he wants to change that going forward.

“I think we’ve got to find a way to create more explosive plays, whether that’s mixing in more of our play-action game, which we’ve kind of gotten away from,” Bradford said. “We’re trying to create some of these plays with some deeper-route concepts. That’s one way, but however we do it, we’ve just got to figure out a way to make sure that it happens.”

There have been other complicating issues, too, including the abrupt resignation of the team’s offensive coordinator. That said, the team is just 1-5 in their last six games after a 5-0 start. Something clearly needs to change, and perhaps taking more risks is worth it.
