Green Bay Packers cornerback Tramon Williams is apparently not very original. Earlier this week, Williams dubbed himself “Optimus Prime” in anticipation of his upcoming matchup against Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, a.k.a. Megatron. That sounds awfully familiar.
A few weeks ago, Seattle Seahawks corner Richard Sherman changed his Twitter name to Optimus Prime for the week leading up to his matchup against Johnson. He held Megatron to only three catches for 46 yards, and most would say earned the right to brag about the performance. Williams does not agree.
“I’m definitely Optimus Prime,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I’m the leader of the Autobots. I’m the leader of the young guys right now and when it comes down to the tough battles, I’ll lead those guys out there.
“Guys like (Seahawks corner) Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman — they talk about how physical they are — but Calvin was pushing those guys around the field like it was nothing. And those are some big guys. You definitely have to be careful with how you play a big guy like that.”
Was Williams watching a different game than the rest of us? If you ask me, holding the league’s best receiver to 46 yards is a win for the defense. Sherman fired back at Williams during an appearance on NFL Network’s “NFL AM” Thursday morning.
“Yeah, we were pushed around to the tune of 46 yards, I believe,” Sherman said, via Around the League. “Not too much pushing. I don’t understand that shot, he took a shot at us. Last I checked, we’ve never given up 250 yards to anybody. We barely give that up in a game. To give that up to one player, I mean that was the last time they played him I believe. I don’t really know if he’d be the one (to) come talk to us about playing coverage.”
Sherman was referring to a meeting between the Lions and Packers last season, during which Megatron destroyed Green Bay’s defense by catching 11 balls for 244 yards and a touchdown. Based on the facts, it would appear that Williams has started a war of the words that is very difficult for him to win. If Johnson goes off again in Detroit this weekend, Tramon is going to look really, really bad.
