The Washington Redskins are doing everything they can to create the impression that there are no major issues between Trent Williams and the team, but it is clear the All-Pro offensive tackle does not feel the same way.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has said several times that he does not expect Trent Williams to be traded, and president Bruce Allen confirmed that this week by saying Williams is “gonna play football” and “it’ll be with us.” While that may happen at some point in 2019, one of Williams’ former teammates says it won’t be in Week 1.
Former Washington cornerback D’Angelo Hall, who co-hosts the “Hail to the Podcast” with Erin Hawksworth, said he spoke with Williams about his ongoing holdout. What Williams told his former teammate is that there is “zero chance I’ll be in that building” in advance of the season opener a week from Sunday.
That seems pretty definitive. While he has not spoken publicly about it, Williams is said to be at odds with Washington’s medical staff over the way his health scare was handled this offseason. The seven-time Pro Bowler wants to be traded, but the Redskins are reportedly turning away all offers. Williams is scheduled to make nearly $11 million this season and $12.5 million next year, and it sounds likely that his holdout will continue beyond Week 1.
