Jalen Rose criticizes Kevin Love’s Team USA inclusion as ‘tokenism’

Jalen Rose

Jalen Rose is not happy with Kevin Love’s presence on the United States Olympic team this year, but it is certainly not for basketball reasons.

Speaking this week on ESPN’s “Jalen and Jacoby,” Rose said that he was disappointed with Love’s inclusion, which he saw as white “tokenism.”

“Kevin Love is on the team because of tokenism,” said Rose, per Cavaliers Nation. “Don’t be scared to make an all-black team representing the United States of America. I’m disappointed by that. Anybody that watched the league this year knows Kevin Love did not have a stellar season, was not the best player on his team, and did not necessarily deserve to be on this squad.

“I’m gonna tell you whose spot that should be,” Rose went on. “That should be a young man that was born in the Bahamas, that as a McDonald’s All-American played in high school and college in Phoenix, Arizona. Deandre Ayton should have Kevin Love’s spot. I’m disappointed in Team USA for not having the courage to send an all-black team to the Olympics.”

Rose also noted in the segment the supposed “favoritism” that Christian Laettner received in making the 1992 “Dream Team” over the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning.

What Rose fails to mention is the fact that the United States already sent an all-black team to represent them at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, a team that won the gold medal. The 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams were all also all-black. Plus, Love has also already paid his dues at the national level. He was a part of the 2012 team that won gold at the London Games as well.

From a purely basketball standpoint, Love brings an important skillset to balance out the United States roster. Bam Adebayo and Draymond Green are their other potential center options. That means Love’s three-point shooting will be important to properly space the floor.

Rose, who has had similarly questionable moments before, is correct in alluding to Love’s mediocre averages of 12.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this year for Cleveland. But there are plenty of race-neutral reasons why Love is well-deserving of a spot on this year’s Olympic team.

Kevin Love has interest in playing for Blazers

Kevin Love

Kevin Love has a championship ring and over $200 million in career earnings. But one thing he is still missing is an opportunity to play at home.

In a recent appearance on Yahoo! Sports “Posted Up” with Chris Haynes, the Cleveland Cavaliers big man was asked if he was interested in going to the Portland Trail Blazers. Love grew up and attended high school in Lake Oswego, Ore.

“By the way, who wouldn’t want to play with Dame Lillard, first of all?” replied Love. “Dame is, he’s special. He’s amazing.

“I claim Portland,” the five-time All-Star went on. “People asked me where I’m from. I spent all my formative years, I grew up in Portland. People ask me where I was born, obviously I say LA. But Portland is always going to be a special place in my heart. Whether it be at the end of my career, whether it be in six months. Whatever it may be. If I was wearing a Portland jersey, that’s special, right? That’s playing at home.”

Love, 32, is in his seventh season with the Cavaliers and still has two more remaining on his contract after that. But he does not appear to be too happy where he is right now.

Love did reportedly want to get traded to the Blazers not long ago. It seems inevitable that Love will find his way to Portland before his career ends.

Here is how Cavaliers are handling Kevin Love outburst

Kevin Love

Kevin Love threw an extremely bizarre temper tantrum during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ loss to the Toronto Raptors on Monday night, and the team is reportedly handling the matter internally.

Love apologized to his Cavs teammates after the game, and Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports that the team is focused on moving forward.

Love’s mind-boggling play handed the Raptors a free basket late in the third quarter. It was unclear exactly what he was upset about, but he may have been expressing his displeasure over some no-calls. You can see the video here.

Love’s Cavaliers were playing shorthanded as seven players were out. They also were on the second game of a back-to-back and arrived in Tampa at 3:00 a.m. the day of the game. A lot of factors were not working in their favor, so Love’s seemingly immature outburst was the last thing they needed.

If you remember, Love also had some negative issues last season with the Cavs that created headlines. He doesn’t seem to be doing the best job of leading a young team.

Kevin Love ducked media after throwing temper tantrum in loss

Kevin Love

Kevin Love ducked the media after throwing a temper tantrum in his Cleveland Cavaliers’ loss to the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

Love’s Cavaliers were playing shorthanded as seven players were out. They also were on the second game of a back-to-back and arrived in Tampa at 3:00 AM the day of the game. At lot of factors were not working in their favor. The last thing they needed was someone not playing hard, but that was Love.

First, he made a mind-boggling play late in the third quarter and just gave Toronto a basket (video here). He then got benched the rest of the game and headed to the locker room before the final buzzer. Cavs reporter Chris Fedor reported that Love did not speak with the media after the loss.

Cavs head coach JB Bickerstaff did say that Love at least apologized to his teammates.

Love is getting paid over $31 million on a 21-40 team. The least he could do is provide a good example for the team’s younger players. On Monday, he did the exact opposite. Recall that last year he also had some negative issues that made headlines.

Video: Kevin Love looked like he was shaving points on this play

Kevin Love walking

Kevin Love made such an odd play late in his Cleveland Cavaliers’ 112-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Monday night that it looked like he was shaving points.

Love seemed to be upset with an official, possibly over the way the ball was given to him from such a long distance in order for him to take it out after a Malachi Flynn layup late in the third quarter. Love rejected the ball, but it ended up in the court. The Raptors got a steal and Stanley Johnson passed to Flynn for a 3-pointer.

What in the world was Love doing? That’s such an embarrassing play.

Love was upset about some no-calls from the refs, including after he was pushed in the back.

There’s still no excuse.

As if the inbounds sequence weren’t bad enough, the way Love just walked without even hustling made it even worse. He was just done.

The Cavaliers replaced him to start the fourth quarter, and he did not return. Love had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Love is making over $31 million this season for that. That’s why some teammates seem to feel he is overpaid.

Kevin Love shouts out Johnny Juzang after big UCLA win

Kevin Love

One former Bruin shouted out a current Bruin after UCLA’s big win over Michigan on Tuesday night.

UCLA defeated Michigan 51-49 in the East Region finals to advance to the Final Four. Johnny Juzang has been the star of the NCAA Tournament for the Bruins and on Tuesday continued to carry them.

Juzang scored 28 of UCLA’s 51 points and now has 108 points over five games in the tournament. That puts him just behind UCLA legends Lew Alcindor and tied with Bill Walton for the most points through five NCAA Tournament games.

Former Bruin Kevin Love, who played for UCLA in the 2007-2008 season, shouted out Juzang after the game.

Love’s Bruins also made the Final Four, though they lost to Memphis before reaching the championship game. Juzang is aiming to take his Bruins farther in the Big Dance. They will have to beat No. 1 Gonzaga on Saturday in order to do so.

Collin Sexton appears to ‘like’ tweet calling teammate Kevin Love overpaid

Collin Sexton

Kevin Love is the Cleveland Cavaliers’ highest-paid player this year. Something about that may not sit right with the team’s leading scorer.

A Cavs fan with the handle @MonteMacy tweeted about Love’s contract on Monday, saying that Love “stole $120 million” in the “heist of the century.”

The fan soon noticed that Cavs guard Collin Sexton had ‘liked’ his tweet about Love, providing the receipts to confirm it.

Sexton has since ‘unliked’ the tweet. But the facts still remain that Love is earning $31.3 million this season despite making only four appearances to the tune of 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. The 32-year-old recently returned to the court after a calf issue had sidelined him since December. But he lasted just two games for a total of 12 minutes before seemingly re-aggravating the injury. Beyond this season, Love is still owed $60.2 million over the next two years.

There is an argument that Love earned his contract with past performance, including multiple All-Star appearances in Cleveland and a big contribution to their 2016 title. But he does have a history of issues with Sexton, which could be rearing its head again now.

Kevin Love likely to return to Cavs after All-Star break

Kevin Love

Kevin Love has played in just two games this season because of a calf injury, and it could be at least another two weeks before the Cleveland Cavaliers star suits up again.

Love is unlikely to return to the Cavs before the All-Star break, according to Chris Fedor of

The Cavaliers have only two games remaining before the All-Star break, which spans nine days. Love went through a pre-game workout prior to Saturday’s game and is said to be making progress, but it makes sense for Cleveland to give him the extra time to fully recover.

Love originally suffered a strained calf in the Cavs’ preseason opener. He then appeared in two regular season games before being sidelined on Dec. 27.

Love reportedly felt some soreness in his calf following back-to-back practices last week, which is why he has only been taking part in individual workouts again.

The Cavs are 13-21 on the season and unlikely to make the playoffs. Love’s most important role at this stage is to be a leader for a young team, so Cleveland will be happy to have him back whenever he’s cleared.

Kevin Love shares funny story about LeBron James warning Cavs

LeBron James

Kevin Love shared a funny story recently about LeBron James’ big game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James scored a season-high 46 points in his Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-108 win over Love’s Cavs on Jan. 25. James was ignited by a reaction from a Cavs exec, who celebrated James missing a shot at the end of the third quarter.

But Love recalled another moment from the game that stood out to him.

Love visited with the “Road Trippin” show for an episode published on Monday. In the episode, Love recalled a story of how LeBron warned the Cavs not to “gap” him with their defense. Sure enough, the Cavs gapped him on the play, which led Love (who was on the bench due to injury), to throw his hands up in disgust.

James made them pay.

James had his issues with Love when they were teammates, but that time has long passed. Now James feels comfortable talking to Love during games like an old buddy.

Kevin Love gets engaged to girlfriend Kate Bock

Kevin Love

Congratulations are in order for Kevin Love and his girlfriend, now fiancee, Kate Bock.

Both Love and Bock shared photos on their Instagram accounts on Sunday night from their engagement.

“‘Souls tend to go back to who feels like home.’

“My Fiancé. The Joy of My Life,” Love wrote as his comment on the photo.

Bock shared her comment after being proposed to for her birthday.

“Well, this was the best birthday surprise I could have ever imagined. I couldn’t be happier to have been asked to be a Love by my love. Heart bursting all day & night,” she wrote on her comment.

Love and Bock have been dating for nearly six years. They gave us one of our favorite Halloween costumes several years ago.

The Cleveland Cavaliers forward has only played in two games this season due to a strained calf but is taking care of big business off the court.
