Well before the 2011 season had even come to a close, many believe the Colts had already made up their minds about drafting Andrew Luck. It made for a dramatic storyline with Peyton Manning, but it was the obvious choice. Earlier this week, the Colts finally confirmed those plans. As far as Robert Griffin III is concerned, his unwillingness to join Indianapolis for a private workout helped them decide what to do with the No. 1 pick.
“They offered me a private workout and we refused. I didn’t do any private workouts for anybody,” Griffin said Wednesday according to the Washington Post. “After that, I think feelings might’ve been hurt or something like that. I went to D.C. on a visit and (Indianapolis) didn’t offer a visit at all, and so we kind of knew what direction they were going. But Andrew’s their guy. You can’t be mad about that.”
Griffin did win the Heisman, so you can understand where his confidence comes from. That being said, I think the Colts inviting him for a private workout was more a case of the team doing its due diligence. Unless RG3 absolutely blew the Colts away during a private workout, chances are they were still going to select Luck. He may have made their decision a little easier by refusing, but I highly doubt Indy was heavily influenced by RG3 turning down their request.
