Alex Torres wears massive protective hat and the jokes roll in

Alex Torres Mets hat

Relief pitcher Alex Torres has once again chosen safety over style, and once again he has been mocked as a result.

Torres, who recorded out No. 27 for the save in the Mets’ 5-4 win over the Marlins Saturday, wore a new protective safety cap while pitching. He also made headlines last year for wearing an oversized protective cap while pitching for the Padres.

According to the New York Daily News, Torres received the hat Saturday, just in time for the game. It is a pad that fits over his normal cap and connects in the back via Velcro. And despite how funny it looks on the outside, Torres says it’s not a distraction for him.

“No — maybe for the hitters,” he said.

Torres was motivated to wear the protective cap after seeing Alex Cobb get hit in the head by a line drive in 2013.

As much as we enjoy having fun with Torres for the aesthetics of his hat, he got his first career save Saturday, so the joke is on us.

But … here are some of the best jokes we saw about his hat. These are pretty great.
