Gunner Kiel Switches Commitment from LSU to Notre Dame after Mother’s Emotional Plea
High school quarterback prospect Gunner Kiel ended a wild recruitment when he switched his commitment from LSU and enrolled at Notre Dame, the school announced Tuesday.
Kiel, who is from Columbus, Indiana, committed to Indiana last summer before switching to LSU. He was set to enroll at LSU on Monday, but the distance from home became a reality for his family when he was all set to leave.
“From what I have been told, he is no longer coming to LSU,” recruiting expert Michael Scarborough of Rivals.com told The Shreveport Times Monday night. “He wants to come to LSU, but his mother (Aleta Kiel) got very emotional Monday and did not want her son to leave. He plans to enroll in classes at Notre Dame on Tuesday.
“What has been relayed to me is that he wants to come to LSU, but his parents want him at Notre Dame because it is closer to home,” Scarborough said.
Kiel enrolled at Notre Dame Tuesday, so the story has been confirmed. I don’t necessarily think his decision is a bad one — I’ve seen a lot of highly-touted recruits go across the country and flop. Most of the successful players I’ve seen stayed close to home. It just sucks that he didn’t make his decision earlier and that he took LSU along for a jerky ride.
Now it only remains to be seen if Landon Collins’ mother convinces her son to switch from Alabama to LSU.
