Tony Romo: NFL could have been more ‘mature’ with fantasy football event

Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is upset with the NFL after the league forced him to cancel a fantasy football event he was scheduled to host in Las Vegas next month. Why? Because Romo thinks it was all about the money.

The convention, which was supposed to take place at a property owned by the Venetian Hotel Resort Casino, was called off due to the NFL’s concern over its policy with gambling. Romo insists the league just wanted a cut of the profits.

“The NFL could have handled it in far better ways and there would have been a lot of issues that could have been resolved with the venue change or just wanting to be part of it,” he told ESPN’s Colin Cowherd on Tuesday, per John Machota of The Dallas Morning News. “There’s 10 different ways to handle it and that part of it made it very frustrating for the people involved.”

Romo says the league never contacted him, and he believes NFL officials were more focused on persuading people to not attend than they were with having the event cancelled.

“It’s like when you’re in high school and you don’t get invited to the party, it makes you feel bad,” he added. “If they really wanted to just be a part of it, all they had to do was call and ask. It would have been a lot easier than going about the process the way they did.”

Again, Romo believes it was all about the money.

“It does make it sound sometimes like it’s an issue about money, which is disappointing because we were just trying to get the fans to hang out with players,” he said. “It seems like a no-brainer to me, especially because it really wasn’t going to be something that I didn’t think was going to break the NFL’s heart money-wise. But obviously they have an issue.”

Dez Bryant already blasted the league for squashing the event, and one of its organizers claims it was scheduled to be held at a convention center that has no slot machines or gambling tables on site.

Come on, Tony — this is the NFL we’re talking about. They don’t care about money. Let’s not go around tossing out baseless accusations.
