Wife of Redskins GM Scot McCloughan apologizes for disparaging ESPN reporter

Jessica Scot McCloughan

The wife of Redskins GM Scot McCloughan apologized Wednesday for sending nasty tweets about an ESPN reporter from a private account.

Tweets from a now-deleted account showed Jessica McCloughan accusing ESPN reporter Dianna Marie Russini of having an affair with her husband in exchange for scoops about the Redskins.

“I deeply apologize for the disparaging remarks about an ESPN reporter on my personal Twitter account,” McCloughan said in a statement. “The comment was unfounded and inappropriate, and I have the utmost respect for both the reporter and ESPN. I regret that my actions have brought undeserved negative attention to the Redskins organization and its leadership. My comments in no way reflect the opinions or attitudes of the organization and I regret that my behavior has in any way negatively impacted the team and its loyal fan base.”

McCloughan’s account was private at the time she sent the tweets. She has deleted the account, but you can see the tweets here.

What’s interesting to note is that a Redskins spokesman initially denied that McCloughan sent the tweets. He claimed it was the work of an impostor.

After McCloughan came clean, ESPN sent a statement backing Russini, who was caught up in the mess.

“Dianna is an excellent reporter who should never have to be subjected to such vulgar comments. We are obviously extremely disappointed by today’s developments,” ESPN said.

As we previously noted, Russini had long made her mark covering the Redskins prior to McCloughan’s arrival as the team’s GM in January. She was reporting excellent scoops last year and even has had exclusive information on opposing teams, showing her range as a reporter.

Between this and what happened with Robert Griffin III, this has been a horrible week for the Redskins on social media.
