ESPN apologizes for Brent Musbuger gushing over Katherine Webb

katherine webb espnESPN was busy issuing statements on Tuesday. First the network announced that Rob Parker was fired for his RG3 comments, and then they apologized for announcer Brent Musburger drooling over Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend.

ESPN flashed to a shot of McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, during the first quarter of the BCS National Championship Game Monday. Musburger and broadcast partner Kirk Herbstreit began gushing over Webb.

“You see that lovely lady there? She’s Miss Alabama, and that’s AJ McCarron’s girlfriend,” said Musburger. “Wow, I’m telling you, you quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman, wow, whoa!

“If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pops,” Musburger joked.

ESPN and many others didn’t find the comments too amusing. ESPN PR rep Mike Soltys issued the following statement:

“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”

Webb found the praise to be complimentary.

“It was kind of nice,” Webb told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “I didn’t look at it as creepy at all. For a woman to be called beautiful, I don’t see how that’s an issue.”

Webb is a certified beauty queen, so it’s most peoples’ opinion that she is attractive. Still, Musburger was so over-the-top with his comments that many people found the 73-year-old’s words to be excessive and creepy. That’s why ESPN apologized.

Southern ladies are used to such gushing—-I’m sure the young lady didnt take offense to the responce from the announcers—–The young lad has good taste in women—his mother was a good role model.

Still wondering why people are slamming him? He made a statement about 2 beautiful women. He didn’t say anything sexual or derogatory. And he even joked about quarterbacks and good looking women. Lay off!

How about Brent doing biased commentating on every telecast he has ever done.  I have watched him for 15 years and you can tell which team he wants to win within 10 minutes of the start of the game.  In the Alabama / Notre Dame game he yelled out “horrendous call” against Notre Dame on a possible penalty against Alabama in the first quarter.  I’m sorry but as a primary announcer you don’t focus on drama statements and bias as he does.  You call the game and let the color guys do the rest.  Brent has a horrible history of doing this .  He is the worst in the business and needs to retire now or get fired.

It never ceases to amaze me how much value we put in the opinion of public/celebrity personalities.   Who cares what Brent has to say.  ESPN/ABC give him a platform and a open micorphone and he has the freedom to rattle on.  Who needs TV commentators anyhow, turn the volume up and let the game announcers do the play by play.  It works for people in the stands…Maybe Brent can get a job waiting tables at Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa.

Will he be fired also or is ESPN color blind when it comes to their announcers???

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.harris.31586 Charles Harris

Amen!!   he will jump on the teams thats in the lead bandwagon, saying how good theey are and no way for the other team to come back, then the other teams comesback, he will start saying  He knew they were good and would comeback because the team leading could not hold them down.. the worse  I hate watching a game he is calling.. I have watch a game in silence just so I would hear his stupid comments.
Prime example in the NC game with Alabama with the ball minute to go in the first half.. Musberger” Saban will be happy to run out the clock” yeah right..  we se e what Saban did SCORE!!!

The youngster (#10) next to Katherine noticed her, too!  ESPN would like to reprimand him, too, for unclean thoughts.
