Aaron Judge could need surgery on his toe during offseason

Aaron Judge has been out for the New York Yankees for a month due to a torn ligament in his toe. The Yankees slugger might need surgery on the toe, but that wouldn’t happen until the offseason.

Judge spoke with the media on Tuesday prior to the team’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. He told reporters that he has begun to do some light hitting and that he is unsure whether he will go to Seattle to participate in the festivities for this year’s All-Star Game.

Judge said that he would not undergo surgery during the season, but that he would be open to offseason surgery if necessary. However, he is unsure whether an operation would be needed.

“There’s talk of surgery, but I don’t think we’re at that [point],” Judge said, via MLB.com’s Bill Ladson. “I’m not a doctor. I have no idea. They throw around eight different things.”

Judge injured his toe running into the wall while making a catch during a game at Dodger Stadium on June 3. He has been out since then, and the Yankees entered Tuesday 12-13 since the injury.

Judge says his toe is feeling “good” but not “great,” which is a big distinction. He’s still not at the point where he can run. Once he is able to run without pain, he will be very close to being able to return. It seems like it’s just a matter of time until he starts feeling well enough.

The reigning AL MVP was batting .291 with a 1.078 OPS prior to suffering the injury.
