Brian Cashman on losing Robinson Cano to Mariners: They Yankeed us

Brian-Cashman-Yankees-Faked-Interest-in-Carl-CrawfordSomeone turned the tables on the New York Yankees for a change, and Brian Cashman is well aware of that.

In an interview with ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” crew at the winter meetings on Tuesday, Cashman acknowledged that the Seattle Mariners did to them exactly what they usually do to others: steal their best players by signing them for more money.

“Seattle essentially took [Cano] from us,” Cashman admitted. “They Yankeed us. We’re used to taking great players from other clubs and in this case, Seattle took a great player from the Yankees. And they made it an easy decision for him at that number.”

Yes, they certainly did. 10 years and $240 million will likely sway any player.

Cashman also said he was happy the difference in prices the teams offered Cano was so great because it doesn’t make them look as bad for losing him. They were supposedly offering around $160 million over seven years.

We have felt for a long time that the Yankees were willing to let Cano go. If they offered him $220 million, you can bet he would have stayed. The Yankees just didn’t feel like he was worth that money.
