Jacob deGrom ‘surprised’ he got pulled so early by Mets
The New York Mets made it clear on Sunday that they are taking great precautions with their handling of Jacob deGrom.
deGrom was pulled after one inning of work against the Philadelphia Phillies. He walked three, struck out two, and did not allow a run.
“I was kind of surprised, honestly,” deGrom said about being pulled, via Newsday’s Tim Healey. “I definitely would have liked to go back out there. The reasoning I understand, but who wants to pitch one inning as a starter?”
A few different factors contributed to the brief outing for deGrom. First, this was his first start since he injured his elbow on a swing. Secondly, he threw 45 pitches — the most he’s thrown in an inning. The first inning took a long time and there was a rain delay before the game.
Mets says deGrom left for precautionary reasons due to his high pitch count and the rain delay.

Given how Matt Harvey’s career shook out with injuries, you can’t really blame the Mets for handling deGrom carefully. They’ll get him back up to speed before long, but why push things if it’s not needed? The 29-year-old is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA this season.
