Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez had what will likely be the most bizarre strikeout of his career on Tuesday night. Likewise, Washington Nationals catcher Jose Lobaton probably won’t ever catch a foul tip on a two-strike count the way he did.
Gomez struck out in the bottom of the second after a foul tip got stuck in Lobaton’s mask. While there was some confusion initially, the umpire eventually ruled — correctly — that Gomez was out. There is no rule that states you have to catch the ball in your mitt, and it clearly never touched the ground.

Would that be considered squeezing a foul tip the hard way or the easy way? Lobaton didn’t really have to try, but his ears were probably ringing for the rest of the night. We’ll categorize it somewhere in between.
