Report: MLB working on relaxing shoe restrictions

Rob Manfred

MLB is working on a more relaxed shoe policy after encountering criticism the past few years.

Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports that MLB and the MLBPA are working on changing the league’s footwear policy to allow players the ability to wear cleats with more colors and designs than they are currently allowed.

The current rule requires “At least 51% of the exterior of each Player’s shoes must be the Club’s designated primary shoe color and the portion of the Club’s designated primary shoe color must be evenly distributed throughout the exterior of each shoe.”

The league has received criticism over the policy. Earlier this month, Indians reliever Mike Clevinger complained about being fined for his cleats. In May, Cubs utility man Ben Zobrist complained about a warning from MLB over his cleats.

MLB appears to finally be working on something more player-friendly that might help with engaging fans.
