Nick Castellanos did not part ways with the Philadelphia Phillies on particularly good terms, and the veteran is trying to use it as a learning experience.
Castellanos opened up about an incident in Miami last season in which he brought a beer into the dugout after being benched during a game. Castellanos blamed himself for the incident, saying he let his own frustrations build up for too long instead of trying to quickly address them with coaches.
“I said I will learn from this,” Castellanos said, via Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports. “I let the emotions get the best of me in the moment. [Going forward] possibly if I see things that frustrate me or I don’t believe are conducive to winning. [It’s about] not letting things just pile up over time so when I address it, it’s less emotional.”
Castellanos never held back in Philadelphia, at least when his frustrations reached a boiling point. He was obviously unhappy with his reduced role last year, and his lack of production combined with an inflated salary did not endear him to Phillies fans. In his mind, things might have gone better had he been more proactive in working out his issues.
Castellanos was quickly snapped up by the San Diego Padres, who clearly believe the veteran has something left in the tank and has learned a lesson from how last year unfolded. They may well get a motivated player as a result.
