Mavericks officially announce signing of David Lee
The NBA’s premier reclamation project takers are at it again.
The Dallas Mavericks officially announced on Monday the signing of veteran big man David Lee.
The Mavs had been considered heavy favorites for Lee from the time he was bought out by the Celtics late last week.
Lee, 32, was stuck getting minimal playing time in an overcrowded Boston frontcourt rotation, but now he finds himself in a great situation with Dallas. Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle is renowned for, amongst other things, his ability to cultivate resurgences in seemingly washed-up veterans by deploying them in intelligent ways.
The former Florida Gator will be able to play either the 4 or the 5 for the Mavs, while his passing skill and his efficient low-post scoring make him a natural offensive fit next to Dirk Nowitzki. Lee also rebounds consistently and can operate effectively around the elbows. Dallas’ relatively conservative scheme should help minimize the defensive shortcomings of the slow-footed big man as well.
For a team that thrown the likes of JaVale McGee, Charlie Villanueva, Dwight Powell, and even Jeremy Evans into the fire this season in the hopes of finding a dependable second unit big, Lee will be a very welcome addition.
