LeBron James is in his 23rd season in the NBA, and with the way he’s playing, a 24th year in the league still seems very likely for the future Basketball Hall of Famer.
But if he’s to give it a go for at least one more season in the NBA, it may not be with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James, who turned 41 in December, doesn’t have a contract beyond the 2025–26 NBA season. He picked up his $52.63 million player option for this season with Los Angeles, but he’s on track to become a free agent this summer, leaving questions about his future—not just with the Purple and Gold, but in the league as a whole.
Former NBA superstar and Indiana Pacer sharpshooter Reggie Miller said he doesn’t see James leaving the Lakers, but entertained the idea of another Cleveland homecoming for “The King.”
“Could I see LeBron going to home Cleveland with Donovan Mitchell, with Evan [Mobley], I don’t know, possibly – but that wouldn’t be a bad team to go back and try to win another championship with,” Miller said in a recent appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show.”
It would be much easier to predict James’ future if he had regressed to the point of being nothing more than a bench ornament, but that day has yet to come, as he continues to win his battle against Father Time.
A return to the Cavaliers sounds like a tasty narrative for the 21-time NBA All-Star.
Cleveland has the talent to win a championship, and an aging franchise icon coming back for one last mission has the makings of an NBA box-office hit.
How James will punctuate his storied career will be entirely in his hands.
