Lane Kiffin’s mom worried about son’s safety in return to Tennessee

Lane Kiffin Nick Saban

Lane Kiffin is going to return to a chorus of boos when the Alabama offensive coordinator travels to Tennessee with his team on Saturday. Kiffin’s mother, Robin, is terrified that some fans in Knoxville will go beyond just booing.

In a fantastic piece that was written by Jon Solomon of CBSSports.com, Kiffin’s mother provided a handful of powerful quotes about her son that only a mother could come up with. One of them was about Lane’s safety this weekend.

“I’m scared to death for his safety,” Robin Kiffin told Solomon. “Some people were visiting us last weekend from Tennessee and they said they better not let him on the sideline, they should put him in the press box. I want him to be in the press box.”

Some offensive coordinators call plays from the press box, but Kiffin has been on the sideline with Alabama every game this season. We don’t expect him to change his approach for his mom or for Tennessee fans.

Robin was also asked if she had seen the Tosh.0 skit that aired last week ripping Kiffin to shreds. She went into full-blown mom mode.

“Lane sent it to me on a family group text,” Robin said. “It was awful. That language is horrible. … They never leave him alone. I don’t see them picking on anybody else like that. That guy at Texas Tech (Mike Leach), he locked a quarterback in a shed and he gets another job. Are they still talking about that? No. The Arkansas guy (Bobby Petrino) gets caught on a motorcycle wreck with another woman and he gets another job. Are they talking about him? No.”

Daniel Tosh brought in a beautiful blonde (read more about her here) to play Kiffin’s wife, Layla. Robin said that the presence of Kiffin’s beautiful wife is one of the reasons there is so much “jealousy” surrounding him. That, and the fact that Kiffin has had such a great deal of success at such a young age — or so she says.

The word “success” won’t hold much weight when Lane returns to Knoxville this weekend. He ditched the Volunteers after one 7-6 season to take the head coaching job at USC, where he also turned out to be a failure.

We feel for Robin. It can’t be easy to watch this many people despise your son.
