Shedeur Sanders sends notable message about Heisman after win over Texas Tech

Shedeur Sanders at a press conference

Shedeur Sanders is stumping for one particular Heisman Trophy candidate after his team’s latest win over the weekend.

Sanders and the No. 20-ranked Colorado Buffaloes took down Texas Tech 41-27 on Saturday to improve to 7-2 on the season. A strong stat line of 291 passing yards and four total touchdowns (three passing and one rushing) by Sanders helped lead the way. But Colorado also got another big contribution from two-way star Travis Hunter, who led the team in receiving with nine catches for 99 yards and a TD. Hunter made his impact felt defensively as well and even had a downright absurd grab for an interception in the first half (though it did not count because of a penalty).

In a post to his X page after the game, Sanders sent a noteworthy message about the Heisman race.

“@TravisHunterJr should win the Heisman,” Sanders wrote.

The junior Hunter is one of the clear favorites for the Heisman, but it is a very crowded race with Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, and Miami’s Cam Ward all having strong arguments as well. Nevertheless, Hunter, who now has 856 receiving yards and nine touchdowns to go along with two interceptions and seven passes defended, has a built-in advantage in that he is the only one who plays on both sides of the ball.

In the 21st century, Devonta Smith (2020) is the only non-quarterback or running back to have won the Heisman. But Sanders is among many who believe that Hunter, who has already produced numerous game-altering sequences this season, should be the winner in 2024.
