We are still roughly three months away from the start of the college football season, but Virginia Tech is already dealing with some major obstacles.
The Hokies announced on Friday that two of their defensive backs, senior Adonis Alexander and junior college transfer Jeremy Webb, will not be playing for the team in 2018. Alexander is expected to enter the NFL supplemental draft, while Webb suffered a torn Achilles and is out for the year.
Virginia Tech announces CB Adonis Alexander is no longer on the football team and CB Jeremy Webb underwent surgery to repair left Achilles and is out for the year. A huge blow to the #Hokies' cornerback position, with two potential starters now out.

Former Virginia Tech CB Adonis Alexander is expected to enter the NFL supplemental draft, sources say. Lot of off-field issues for teams to sort through, but he’s 6-3, talented, raw but high upside … should get picked.

According to a report from Andy Bitter of The Roanoke Times, Alexander was dismissed from the team due to academic issues. Alexander has appeared in 32 games for Virginia Tech over the past three seasons and recorded seven interceptions and 125 total tackles, but he has been dogged by off-field issues. He was suspended for the start of the 2016 season over a marijuana possession charge and again in 2017 for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
Webb arrived as a transfer just a few weeks ago and was expected to compete for a starting job immediately. The Hokies may have a tough time replacing both players.
