The Dallas Cowboys are hoping Tony Romo can return after the team’s Week 7 bye, and it doesn’t matter how well Dak Prescott plays in the meantime — he’s reportedly not stealing the starting job.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is “zero chance” Romo does not return to his starting role when he’s cleared by doctors. Despite Prescott’s efficient play and the Cowboys’ 3-1 record, a source told La Canfora the team believes it will have a more balanced attack on offense and have a better chance of getting the passing game going with Romo.
Prescott has done an excellent job of managing the game and avoiding mistakes — he has yet to throw an interception — and is viewed as the quarterback of the future. He is poised and confident and has received high accolades within in the organization and outside of it. But the Cowboys are running a constricted version of the offense for him and astutely simplifying some things for him, and its scope should expand significantly with Romo back.

Dez Bryant has always been at his best when Romo is throwing to him, and the star wide receiver is expected to return from a knee injury within the next few weeks. Prescott has done a good job of putting the Cowboys in a position to win, but he hasn’t quite lived up to the preseason hype.
None of this is a knock on Prescott. Romo is simply the better option at the moment, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is very loyal to the veteran. That said, Prescott should feel good about what Jones said about his play earlier in the season.
