Everyone seems to be talking about Russell Wilson’s sex life this week, and the Seattle Seahawks quarterback brought that on himself. During a Q&A at The Rock Church on Sunday, Wilson said he has been abstaining from sex with his girlfriend Ciara for religious reasons.
Chicago sports radio host Dan Bernstein believes Wilson’s decision to abstain is not strictly based on religion.
During his show on WSCR 670 The Score on Tuesday, Bernstein suggested that Wilson could be gay.
“If you start to piece this all together, I think you come away with a pretty easy-to-reach conclusion here,” he said, as transcribed by Eric Edholm of Shutdown Corner. “The whole thing. Don’t you? Don’t you just wish he could feel comfortable enough to be a little more truthful with all of it?”
Bernstein’s cohost Terry Boers wasn’t getting it at first, so Bernstein was happy to elaborate.
“I don’t think you’re quite getting what I am getting at. Put the pieces together,” he added. “The whole Russell Wilson thing — all of the artifice here. Everything that’s going on. All the strangeness. All of the stuff with the first wife, and the discomfort there … and this isn’t a new pattern.
“And I understand there were times past where you felt you had to live a lie. This isn’t that time. This is quite the opposite of that; you don’t have to live a lie. You don’t have to be artificial.”
Bernstein was, of course, referring to the rumors about something going on between Golden Tate and Wilson’s ex-wife. Can you say cheap shot?
Believe it or not, that probably isn’t the dumbest discussion we have heard in the wake of Wilson’s abstinence comments. That honor still belongs to these two ESPN employees.
Bernstein didn’t say there would be anything wrong with Wilson being gay, but the implication still seemed uncalled for. There are plenty of people who believe that Wilson isn’t having sex simply because he’s a religious man. Essentially calling him a liar is unfair.
