Longtime New York Giants team owner John Mara has shared some unfortunate health news.
Mara revealed in a statement on Monday that he was recently diagnosed with cancer. The 70-year-old said he is “feeling strong and optimistic” about his prognosis and that he plans to continue with his day-to-day responsibilities while undergoing treatment.
“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara wrote.
“I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support — personally, professionally, and medically.
“I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”
Mara did not go into detail about the form of cancer he is battling.

Mara is the grandson of Tim Mara, who founded the Giants in 1925. The Mara family now co-owns the team with the Tisch family, who purchased a 50% stake in 1991. Mara became the president and CEO of the Giants when his father Wellington Mara died in 2005.
The Giants have won two Super Bowls under Mara and co-owner Steve Tisch. New York has struggled in recent years, however, and Mara sent a clear message to the team’s coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season.
