While the Panthers have been the surprise of the NFL season thus far, the Vikings have shocked more than a few people as well with their 7-2 start. Adrian Peterson leads the league in rushing yards, but it’s Minnesota’s quarterback who drew praise from former Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano.
The Vikings selected Teddy Bridgewater No. 32 overall in last year’s NFL Draft in hopes he could become their quarterback of the future. If Schiano is to be believed, Bridgewater is on track to have a quite a distinguished career.
“This may be a little bit weird, but I look at Teddy Bridgewater and he reminds me of a young Joe Montana,” Schiano told ESPN’s Mike and Mike, via CBS Sports. “He’s accurate, he’s just mobile enough to give you real fits and he’s a smart quarterback. He’s got weapons around. That’s why I think his ceiling is sneaky.”
With Peterson looking as good as ever and a defense ranked No. 2 in points allowed (17.1) and No. 9 in yards allowed (336.6), Minnesota doesn’t need Bridgewater to do as much as other quarterbacks in the league, yet. However, he’s show more than enough for the Vikings to think they made the right decision in selecting him.
Bridgewater doesn’t have the measureables that makes scouts drool, but very few doubted the intangibles and high football IQ he brings. Those are areas often linked to Montana as well. And while it’s entirely too early to say Teddy Bridgewater will craft a career remotely close to the one Joe Montana forged for himself, having a couple of traits of one of the greatest to ever play the position can’t hurt along the way.
