Jay Gruden says Redskins are not trading Su’a Cravens
It would be reasonable to assume that the relationship between Su’a Cravens and the Redskins is in an irreparable state after what happened with the defensive back last season, but Washington head coach Jay Gruden insists that is not the case.
While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Gruden said he has heard the rumors about the Redskins shopping Cravens on the trade market. He basically said they are untrue.
“We’re not trading him,” Gruden said, per Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. “I just saw that on the ticker. He’s still a member of this football team and we have every intention of seeing where he’s at. I’ll have to talk to him and see where he’s at mentally. Physically, I know he’s going to be in great shape.
“The big thing is, is this something that he wants to do? He has to commit to it full time. He’s a good football player, there’s no doubt about it. He’s a great kid. I’m sure it will work out for him.”
That last part seems to indicate there are still questions about Cravens’ level of commitment. The former second-round pick left the Redskins early last season under some unusual circumstances, and they eventually placed him on the reserve/left squad list. Gruden said at the time that Cravens was dealing with personal issues as rumors swirled that he was contemplating retirement. Back in December, Cravens’ agent released a statement indicating concussions were the issue.
We have already heard that at least one team is interested in trading for Cravens, but perhaps the Redskins are not ready to give up on the 22-year-old just yet.
