Justin Forsett says he’s still the Ravens’ starting running back
Baltimore Ravens running back Justin Forsett doesn’t think that a brief hiccup over the weekend will jeopardize his status as the team’s starter.
The Pro Bowler was released by the Ravens over the weekend but was quickly re-signed by the team shortly thereafter as it all turned out to be a maneuver for Baltimore to open up an extra roster spot, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.
Forsett, who is said to have been chosen for the maneuver because of his status as a vested veteran who wouldn’t have to go through waivers, is confident that he’s still the lead singer in the Ravens’ backfield.
“I’ll be lining up there as the starter as of now,” Forsett said on Wednesday. “It’s my job to go out there and try to dominate and make it clear for them.
“I was very much in the loop,” he added, half-jokingly, about his short-lived release. “We decided to go with the trial separation. During that time, we realized that we’re better together, and we came back and made it work.”
The 30-year-old Forsett rushed for 641 yards and two touchdowns in 2015, splitting time with Javorius “Buck” Allen before going down with a broken right forearm in Week 11. A year before that, he posted totals of 1,266 rushing yards and eight touchdowns as the undisputed No. 1 back.
But the Ravens brought in Terrance West in November and drafted Kenneth Dixon in April to compete for touches. So while Forsett has managed to clear the roster hurdle, he’ll still have his work cut out for him in 2016.
