The 1972 Miami Dolphins were recognized this season for being the best team in NFL history. Just don’t try to tell Larry Csonka that the squad was “named” the best team.
Csonka and his teammates from the ’72 squad were honored at Sunday’s Dolphins-Cincinnati Bengals game for being named the best team in NFL history as part of the NFL 100 series.
Prior to the game, Csonka spoke with reporters about the honor. He is very passionate about stating that his team was not “named” the best team, but rather they “took it” by being the best ever.

He’s right — based on their accomplishments, there is no alternative.
The ’72 Dolphins went 14-0 in the regular season and 17-0 as they won the Super Bowl. The 2007 Patriots went 16-0 but lost in the Super Bowl to finish 18-1.
You can’t argue with Csonka, who rushed for 8,081 yards and 64 touchdowns in his career. Based on what they did, they indeed “took” the title.
