NFL sending message with multiple fines for criticizing referees
It has not been a great week for NFL referees, but the league itself is cracking down on criticism from within the locker room.
According to Tom Pelissero, three players — Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, Rams linebacker Clay Matthews, and Lions defensive back Tracy Walker — received $12,500 fines for criticizing referees in a clear message to players.
Not only was #Browns QB Baker Mayfield fined $12,500 for his comments on officiating, #Rams LB Clay Matthews and #Lions DB Tracy Walker were also fined $12,500 for the same offense, I'm told. A message from the NFL amidst mounting criticism in locker rooms and elsewhere.

Notably, Matthews was fined not for postgame comments, but for a tweet calling for more accountability in officiating.
Much of the outcry came in response to a series of calls that went against the Detroit Lions last Monday, one of which the NFL even admitted was wrong. Still, being that outspoken about officiating is going to get you a fine, no matter how much of a point you have.
