Pierre Garçon questions why Washington has not re-signed Kirk Cousins

The Redskins’ deadline to lock Kirk Cousins up with a long-term deal is approaching, but Washington and the team’s quarterback appear to be far apart on terms.

Pierre Garçon, who signed a five-year contract with San Francisco in March, was one of Cousins’ go-to targets for the past two seasons. Last season, Garçon caught 79 passes (the second-best mark of his career) on 114 targets. He received more than 100 targets both years.

The QB-WR duo played well together, and Cousins has been a reliable, top-level quarterback for Washington. Garçon isn’t sure why his former team has hesitated to commit to Cousins for the long-term future.

“He’s been doing it for a long time,” Garçon told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday. “He is the guy that’s helped us make those playoff runs and do a lot of things great for us. I don’t know why he’s not the long-term answer there. But I’m happy we’re all getting those opportunities now and he’s showing his talents on the field. Kirk’s doing very well and his numbers are getting better and better. And he enjoys playing football. He works at it.”

Garçon would probably feel better about the 49ers’ chances if they had Cousins. His new starting QB is expected to be Brian Hoyer.
