The Pittsburgh Steelers have moved on from a former Super Bowl champion days before the start of the 2025 season.

Robert Woods was released from the Steelers’ practice squad on Tuesday. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the veteran wide receiver asked to be released and only wants to continue his career if there is a team that wants him on the 53-man roster.

#Steelers WR Robert Woods asked for and was granted his release from Steelers practice squad, and a source says he only wants to continue playing if he’s on a 53-man roster and playing.

The #Steelers handled the request solidly and understood.

Woods signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Steelers in free agency. He did not make the 53-man roster after the preseason, which was not all that surprising.

Woods’ production has fallen off significantly in recent years. The 33-year-old spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans and had just 629 yards and a touchdown across the two campaigns. Woods was with the Tennessee Titans for a year prior to that, but his most productive seasons came with the Los Angeles Rams.

Woods played for the Rams for five seasons from 2017-2021. He had more than 1,000 yards receiving in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. Woods was part of the Rams’ Super Bowl champion team in 2021, though he tore his ACL midway through the year.

The chances of Woods landing on a 53-man roster this season are slim, but he is now free to explore opportunities.
