Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins was able to play in Week 1 after undergoing foot surgery during the offseason, but it does not sound like he emerged without setbacks.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Watkins played with “severe discomfort” in his foot and had X-rays taken after the game. While the tests did not reveal that he re-broke his foot, it’s possible Watkins could be shut down for “several weeks.”
The issue, according to Bills team doctors, comes down to pain management. Watkins has been told there is no surgical procedure that can alleviate the pain, so it may be a matter of playing on an extremely painful injury or taking time off. According to Mehta, the pain is so bad that there was a belief on Sunday he could be done for the season.
Watkins was animated in calling out the Bills at the end of last season, but he has much bigger concerns now. Losing him would be a major blow to a team that already began the year on a sour note.
