Sean Payton responds to viral clip of confrontation with Russell Wilson
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton tried to downplay any issues with quarterback Russell Wilson in light of a viral video from Saturday’s loss to Detroit.
The relationship between Payton and Wilson once again became the subject of speculation over video of Payton delivering a seemingly heated message to his quarterback during a 42-17 loss. Payton brushed aside the question, saying the discussion was simply part of the game.
“Nothing more to share,” Payton said Monday, via Mike Klis of 9News. “It’s certainly in-game intensity, heat of the moment all those things but nothing more to add.”
Payton added that he had felt no need to address the moment with Wilson or the team.
“Not at all,” Payton said. “First or all we haven’t had a team meeting. And Russ and I have a great relationship. No, not at all.”
In all likelihood, this is simply Payton’s intensity showing through. Reports from earlier in the season suggested that the relationship between the coach and quarterback was fine. Plus, the team had won six of seven coming into Saturday’s contest.
Wilson has thrown for 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the season. He has been fine, even if his numbers are not what they were at his peak with Seattle. Any frustration presumably passed quickly.
