The assumption has been that the Dallas Cowboys will allow Tony Romo to seek a trade at the end of the season, but there’s talk that Romo may seek another route instead.
According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, a source close to the situation believes Romo may seek his release instead of a trade, giving him more freedom to pick a new team without that organization being required to part with significant assets to acquire him.
Would Dallas consent to that? It’s unclear. The relationship between Romo and Jerry Jones isn’t toxic, so it’s possible that the quarterback could receive a release as something of a parting gift. That said, the Cowboys would, ideally, like to receive something in return for him.
Of course, Dallas, or rather Jones, also lives in a dream world where he believes he can convince Romo to stay and back up Dak Prescott. Perhaps if Prescott gets benched before the season ends, maybe, but otherwise, don’t count on that.
