Not to single out any individual performances or anything … but I must single out an individual performance from Sunday. In case you missed it, Andruw Jones went 0 for 5 against the Red Sox. It wasn’t just any 0 for 5. It was 0 for 5, with five strikeouts. He didn’t even put a ball in play. To make matters worse, Andruw Jones had just been moved from the cleanup spot to the sixth spot in the lineup because of his slump. See what a confidence boosting move can do for a guy? Are you listening Joe Torre?

Typically, you’ll see a guy go 0 for 4 with 4K’s every now and again. They even have a nickname for such a feat — The Golden Sombrero. It’s like an honor to don the hat every once in a while. But 0 for 5 with 5K’s? That’s taking things to a whole new level. I figure at that point you have to upgrade from gold to platinum, and apparently I’m not alone in my thoughts. The struggling, former 50-home run hitting center-fielder took the Platinum Sombrero on Sunday. His average is now down to .216 which is bad for May, but could be worse. At times like these …. you have to wonder … what Jones’ agent is thinking.
