The Yankees may be leading all of MLB with a .623 winning percentage, but not everything is going well for the team. Shortstop Derek Jeter is 36 years old and having the worst offensive year of his career. Worse yet, Jeter’s contract expires at the end of the year.
The Yankees and Jeter may have different views of the shortstop’s value after the season. The issue could result in one of the stickiest situations in sports since Brett Favre and the Packers divorced. Do the Yankees pony up for an aging shortstop whose play is declining or do they pay him based on his value to the franchise?
