Fred Davis says the NFL’s drug testing system sets you up to fail multiple tests

Fred Davis is one of those players that you look at and think to yourself, “He’ll just never learn.” Last December, Davis was suspended for the remainder of the NFL season after the NFL and NFL Players Association agreed on a punishment for the Redskins tight end for his multiple failed drug tests. The problem with that, Davis says, is that all of the failed tests were based on the same instance of drug use — the weed just wasn’t out of his system yet.

“See the thing is, people are mistaken what that was about and they don’t really know the whole story to that,” Davis explained during an interview with 106.7 The Fan’s Holden and Danny. “It wasn’t failed drug tests in a row. See, that’s the thing about it. I don’t try to get into it, because people are all ‘You failed a drug test repeatedly.’ No, they test you every week. So how is weed gonna be out of your system? It’s set up for you to fail.

“So, it’s one of those situations where you guys are all like, ‘Oh, you failed it again and again. No, it was three weeks in a row they test you, and anybody who smokes weed knows that weed isn’t going to be out of your system in a month. So, of course they’re gonna say it’s repeated.”

Isn’t there some sort of magic drink you can buy at GNC for this type of delinquent behavior? The frightening thing is this guy is kind of a lawyer.

As Sarah Kogod of DC Sports Bog mentioned, we’ll never know if Davis was indeed tested three weeks in a row since the NFL’s drug tests remain confidential. Plenty of players test positive for marijuana use (including nine others at the start of training camp last season) and only fail one time. Does that mean the NFL happened to test them three weeks after they smoked? Or are they just lucky enough that they weren’t tested again until three weeks after their initial test? It’s a nice theory, but Davis isn’t exactly a credible source at this point.
