Darren Clarke Was Nearly Broke when he Won British Open

Winning a prestigious golf major like The Open Championship is an impressive accomplishment. It’s even more significant when it’s your first major win, as it was for Darren Clarke two weeks ago. The pay day isn’t bad either.

Darren Clarke earned 990,000 pounds for winning The Open Championship and 2.2 million pounds from his sponsor Sports Direct and Dunlop. The extra cash apparently was as important for Clarke as winning his first major was.

Clarke’s manager Chubby Chandler told The Daily Mail that Clarke was almost broke when he won the championship. Clarke apparently was hit hard during the recession because of poor investments. For instance, he purchased a private jet that lost 75% of its value. He also has been trying to sell his mansion since last year, creating even more problems.

“The timing could not have been better,” he said. “Darren has had a big cash flow problem.”

Got that? Even people who have earned millions of dollars during their careers can end up nearly broke because of poor management. Then again, you’ve read about Latrell Sprewell and Mark Brunell on this site, so you already knew that.
