Rory McIlroy dusted the field at the PGA Championship last weekend to win his second career major. The Northern Irishman played pretty steady all week, shooting two 67s, a 75, and his best round of the tournament — a 6-under 66 in Sunday’s final round to win the tournament by eight strokes.
Though the 23-year-old’s easy win was surprising, what’s shocking is that he played as well as he did on Sunday. McIlroy admitted on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive” that he overslept and only arrived 30 minutes before his tee time Sunday.
“Some thing that people don’t know is that I went back home,” McIlroy said. “Everyone was talking about how I showed back up about half and hour before my tee time on the last day. I actually took a nap and my dad had to come wake me up because I overslept. He said to me, ‘Rory, you realize you have to play some golf this afternoon?’ I didn’t know where I was, I was so tired.”
Maybe that’s the trick for McIlroy to use at all tournaments — sleep late so you don’t get a chance to psych yourself out.
The win was huge for McIlroy for several reasons. In June, we got on him for missing four cuts in a five-tournament span. Then, it was countryman Graeme McDowell getting on McIlroy for letting his relationship with Caroline Wozniacki fatigue him. Maybe the youngster knew what he was doing all along.
