Viewers were struck by a moment during “Sunday Night Baseball” on ESPN when Alex Rodriguez’s daughters and fiancee Jennifer Lopez entered the broadcast booth to present the former Yankee with a birthday cake.
How did we get to the point that a Red Sox-Yankees game got interrupted by J-Lo giving fiance A-Rod a birthday cake?

While folks debated the moment — it seemed so odd and out of place yet harmless — a funny side-story emerged after the game. It turns out that the cake went untouched.
Breaking. Nobody actually had any A-Rod birthday cake. They left it behind. pic.twitter.com/2xQL6l6OT7

Naturally, a bunch of sportswriters covering the game decided to dig in.
A-Rod left behind the cake presented to him by J-Lo for his Bday on the ESPN broadcast. He did not eat a slice. All of us writers are now eating it instead. pic.twitter.com/wDd3CXAajo

There was no way sportswriters were going to pass up a free dessert. At least the cake got some worthwhile use.
