Aaron Boone hints that Yankees could call up top prospect Gleyber Torres
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone hinted that the team could call up top prospect Gleyber Torres this week.
Boone refused to rule out the possibility that Torres, a consensus top ten MLB prospect, could join the Yankees’ MLB club at some point in the next week.
Boone on if Torres could be called up this week: “I’d say anything’s possible. We have have conversations about that kind of thing. Possible? Yes. Likely? Not necessarily.”

The timing isn’t a coincidence — it’s the date after which teams manipulating service time can delay free agency a year before calling up players, though the Yankees certainly won’t be admitting this publicly. Also relevant is the fact that regular third baseman Brandon Drury is injured with no timetable for a return.
The Yankees acquired Torres from the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 Aroldis Chapman trade, and have since resisted the urge to package him for top players. They may well reap the benefit of that long-term.
