Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has said he is committed to testing free agency following the 2025 MLB season, but that has not stopped the Toronto Blue Jays from trying to sign him to a long-term deal.
The Blue Jays made another contract offer to Guerrero ahead of Opening Day on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. The reporter notes that “a gap still remains between the two sides,” so it does not sound like there will be an agreement.
While Guerrero has not ruled out returning to the Blue Jays, he said previously that he would be headed to free agency if there was no extension in place by the start of spring training. That deadline has long passed. Guerrero also said last month that the two sides never got anywhere close to a deal.

One report earlier this month claimed Guerrero had lowered his “magic number” to $500 million. While the Blue Jays are said to have offered that figure prior to the Feb. 18 negotiating deadline, the proposal included deferrals that Guerrero was not in favor of.
A four-time All Star, Guerrero hit .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2024. He finished sixth in AL MVP voting.
Guerrero recently turned 26 and is in line for a massive payday one way or the other. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said recently that he remains confident the team will re-sign Guerrero.
