Cubs catch break with controversial Anthony Rizzo call
The Chicago Cubs appeared to catch a break from the umpires in Game 3 of the NLDS on Monday against the Giants in the bottom of the sixth inning.
San Francisco’s Conor Gillaspie hit a grounder up the middle to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and second baseman Javy Baez made a great sliding stop. Baez’s throw was in time to get Gillaspie, but first baseman Anthony Rizzo seemed to drag his foot off the bag as he stretched for the throw.

The initial call on the field was that Gillaspie was out. Umpires reviewed the play but did not overturn it because they could not definitively conclude that Rizzo’s foot was off the base at the moment he caught the ball.
The Giants ended up going 1-2-3 in the inning, keeping the score at 3-2 Cubs.
